Press Release - 15th Jan 2004

The Western Isles Connected Communities project team are delighted to have been awarded European funding to complete the financial package to build an innovative wireless broadband network throughout the Western Isles. Highlands & Islands Enterprise has been awarded £2,575,000 towards the cost of the £5,150,000 project which includes Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Western Isles NHS and Western Isles Enterprise. The funding was announced by the Scottish Executive as one of a number of projects to receive funding from the Highlands & Islands Special Transitional Program. The project partners are at an advanced stage of planning the wireless network with over 900 potential business and domestic subscribers already registered through the web site at www.connectedcommunities.co.uk

Announcements on timescales, costs and coverage will be made over the next few weeks when final arrangements regarding contracts for the network should be finalised.
